Our History

Things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.

- Psalm 78:3-4

Our History:

Thank you for visiting our site and your desire to know more about our church. This page is designed to give you a bit of the history of our congregation and tell you a bit of what we are about. Please take some time to read the above links to find out even more. We think that you'll like what you see and we look forward to your visit with us! Over 50 years ago, two brothers, Willie Miles and Nick Britton, saw the need for a church that would welcome and seek out people from all walks of life--ethnicity (race), income level, social status, education level, etc that would have an unwavering commitment to missions. This began Good Shepherd Community Church of Dallas (started as The Family Church and then Faith Community Church). To this day, we welcome and seek out people from all walks of life and are in present financial support of 18 missionaries. In addition to the financial support, we have taken frequent trips overseas in support of some of those missionaries. Three of those missionaries (and their families) are previous pastors of our church. All are personally known by the elders. As an evangelical congregation, we have a commitment to the doctrines of the historic Christian faith along with a commitment to the doctrines springing out of the Reformation (Protestant). We recognize the Bible, God's written word, as our first and final authority on all matters of which it speaks. We are zealous in our commitment to proclaiming the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to all people, both here and abroad so that people may come to know Christ. As we have progressed, we have taken on other crucial expressions and emphases that are central to our identity as well. We are a baptistic congregation--meaning we identify with the historic Baptist principles of believers baptism by immersion and the autonomy and self-government--under the Lordship of Christ--of each and every local congregation. We are led by elders whose appointments are affirmed by the congregation. These elders serve as our pastors and oversee the day to day affairs of the church while taking input from the congregation. Our elders are committed to the spiritual health of our flock and in addition to their Sunday preaching ministry, shepherd the flock by frequently visiting people in their homes and in other locations (hospitals, etc.) The elders of Good Shepherd are also committed to "Reformed" theology with a progressive covenantal hermeneutic. This is expressed primarily in terms of the doctrines of grace known as Biblical Calvinism. You can learn more about our understanding of this by reading some of the articles on our Articles page. While the leadership of GSCC is committed to and held accountable to these doctrines, we welcome any genuine believer who has undergone believer's baptism by immersion and who is in essential agreement with our statement of faith to join us in covenant membership. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about our church, baptism or becoming a member. Again, we look forward to your visit with us!
