I. The Heart’s Audit (The Search for "Cisterns")

An idol is any "good thing" that you have turned into an "ultimate thing." Reflect on the following five areas of your life over the past month:

  1. The Security Test: Have I looked to my bank account, my job performance, or my insurance more than Yahweh for my peace of mind?

  2. The Identity Test: Have I felt "worthless" because of a lack of "likes," approval, or romantic attention? (The idol of Aphrodite/Kama)

  3. The Power Test: Have I tried to control people or situations through anger, manipulation, or "being right" instead of trusting the Father’s sovereignty? (The idol of Ares/Indra)

  4. The Comfort Test: Have I used food, screens, or shopping to "numb" my stress rather than taking my thirst to the Fountain of Living Waters?

  5. The Intellectual Test: Have I trusted in my own "smartness" or digital data to solve my problems more than the understanding given by the Son of God?

II. The Gospel Anchor (The "True God" Response)

For every idol you identified above, speak the specific Truth of the Gospel over it:

If the Idol says...

You Respond with the True God:

"You need me to be safe."

"Yahweh is my help and my shield." (Ps 115)

"You need me to be happy."

"In Your presence is fullness of joy." (Ps 16)

"You need me to be someone."

"I am in Him who is true, a child of God." (1 John 5)

"You need me to understand."

"The Son has come and given me understanding."

III. The Renewal Prayer

(Pray this personally or with your family)

"Most Holy Yahweh, I come before You today acknowledging that I have hewn out broken cisterns this past month. I have sought life in things that have no breath. I renounce the idols of [Name the specific ones identified].

I thank You that the Son of God has come and given me understanding. I re-commit my heart to the only True God and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I pray that as I come to Your Table today, I would abide in the Vine and find my total satisfaction in Your Eternal Life. Amen."
