Sovereign Grace Confession

I (We)* believe in the one God who is threefold in His being – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, The Creator and Preserver of all things.

I believe this God has savingly spoken in Jesus Christ our Lord, and that the Holy Scriptures are the inspired, written revelation of God, our only infallible standard of faith and life.

We believe God created man perfect and holy but through disobedience Adam chose evil and fell away from God and righteousness and came under the power of sin and its penalty of eternal death. Because of this fall we and all men are born with a sinful nature, inclined to do evil, and are under the wrath of God. Man in his natural condition is inwardly depraved in all aspects of his personality and apart from grace is incapable of spiritual good and of returning to God.

We believe that God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, out of his great and free love from eternity, has given to his Son a people, an innumerable multitude, chosen in Christ unto salvation, holiness, and service. God’s choice of particular sinners unto salvation is based solely on his own good pleasure and sovereign will.

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ came into this world on a definite mission to redeem unto God all those whom the Father had given him. For this cause he laid down his life for the sheep and shed his blood for the forgiveness of the sins of many. The Lord Jesus truly bore in his own body on the cross the sins of his people and thus purchased them for God’s glory. Although the death of Christ is a sufficient payment to ransom the whole world, its atoning power extends to those whom God the Father has particularly chosen and called to faith in Jesus Christ through the gospel.

We believe that the Holy Spirit, in order to bring chosen sinners into salvation, extends an inward call to them through the preaching of the gospel. He renews their spirits and wills, enabling them to come most freely and willingly to Christ as Lord and Savior. Moreover, the Holy Spirit never fails to bring to salvation those sinners whom he personally calls to faith in Christ. Having called them to Christ, the Spirit resides within them and seals them unto the day of redemption.

We believe that all those who are redeemed by Christ and renewed by the Spirit, because they are chosen of the Father, are kept by faith through God’s power. He has granted them full forgiveness and unites them to saving union with Christ Jesus and they therefore have eternal life. The saints’ perseverance is anchored to the Savior’s preservation of his people. Salvation is wholly dependent upon God, who has willed to save those whom he gave to his dear Son and called by his Spirit. Salvation is eternal and cannot be lost.

We believe that salvation is of the Lord and of his grace alone. Amen.
