30 Day Reading Plan John Gospel and 1 John

By:

March 10, 2026

30-Day Johannine Reading Plan is designed to synchronize the "Signs" and "Prayer" of the Gospel of John with the "Certainties" and "Commands" of 1 John.

By reading them together, you will see how the Eternal Life promised by Jesus in the Gospel (John 17) becomes the Abiding Reality described by the Apostle in his letter (1 John 5).

The Final Synthesis (Days 28–30)

On the final days of this plan, you will reach the climax of both books. Notice the direct linguistic and theological links:

  • The Definition of Life: In John 17:3, Jesus defines life as knowing the True God. In 1 John 5:20, John declares that we have this life because the Son has given us understanding.

  • The Conflict with the World: In John 17:14–16, Jesus prays for those who are in the world but not of it. In 1 John 5:21, John gives the practical command to stay distinct from the world by "keeping from idols."

  • The Unity of the Godhead: Both passages emphasize that to have the Son is to have the Father. There is no "True God" apart from the one revealed in Jesus Christ.

A Weekly Study Tip

As you read, keep a notebook with two columns: "What Jesus Promised" (Gospel) and "How We Live It" (1 John). You will quickly see that 1 John is essentially a "Manual for Abiding" in the promises of the Gospel.
